When you think of accordian doors, the image of a heavy, plastic and unattractively grey wannabe door may be what comes to mind. That was way back in the day! Today’s stock of accordion doors are anything but ugly, in many cases surpassing the looks of wooden doors in both looks and efficiency.
You’ll find them in a variety of materials, built for durability and beauty. With space at a premium in most modern homes, this style of door can make your rooms look larger, while enhancing your options in furniture arrangements. For example, let’s say your living and dining room are currently separated by a door which opens into the dining room. You need to allow for the door to open, so your dining room table must be pushed further towards the other end of the room, cramping your seating. A quality wooden accordian door, stained and lacquered in a lattice woven pattern looks elegant and immediately gains you two feet of space in the dining room.
Some modern condos and homes are designed with the laundry room as an alcove off the hallway. When guests go down the hall to use the bathroom, they pass by the laundry area. A couple of baskets of laundry and a shelf full of laundry aids doesn’t present a neat appearance. Enter the accordion door, in a finish that blends right into the hallway decor. Voila, an instant privacy screen.
The kitchen pantry door, again, requires precious space to open and access. This is another privacy screen solution admirably served by the accordion door. Removing the regular door in the interest of space has a down side. The view of canned goods, pasta, cereal boxes, mayo, condiments and the like adds annoying clutter to your otherwise tidy kitchen.
It’s hard to decide which aspect is the most attractive. The accordion style door is super as a space saving solution and can be far more attractive than the original door. As for the privacy feature, the accordion style is great n kid’s rooms. If Grandma is coming on a surprise visit, the kids can fill the closet on a moment’s notice and simply slide the door shut – to be cleaned and sorted at the next available opportunity, of course!
If you’re thinking of renovating, it’s an excellent time to assess your design objectives. If you’re adding a family room adjacent to the living room, the accordian door solution saves space and money, allowing for more versatile furniture arrangements. If you want to watch a movie in the living room with your spouse, while the kids are playing video games in the family room, you can just slide the door shut. When you want the open space, leave it open.
As for maintenance, accordion style doors are a quick and easy dusting in the weekly cleaning routine. The durability and good looks make this a perfect choice in many locations.
