Birds For Pets

November 19th, 2009 · No Comments

Although there are birds for sale in almost every pet store out there, you should do some careful thinking before keeping birds as pets. Although they can be very rewarding animal companions, keeping a pet bird also has its downsides. Birds make a lot of noise, and they need plenty of room to move around. Many people use small birdcages for their birds, but your pet will be much happier if you keep it in a decent sized cage where it can flutter about. In addition, many species require companions to be happy. If you keep a bird for a pet all by its self, it may start to grow depressed and unhealthy.

The most difficult part of having birds for pets is dealing with the possibility of escape. Pretty much all pets can get out, of course, but once a bird gets out of the house it can be almost impossible to get the pet back in. Many of the most careful owners of birds for pets I now have at one time or another lost a prized specimen simply because of a single careless moment. It is an avoidable accident, but if you keep a bird for long enough, it is bound to happen one day.

Still, in my opinion the advantages of having birds for pets outweigh the disadvantages. First of all, birds are very attractive animals. Most of them have beautiful plumage, sing pretty songs, and flutter about in a delightful way. They are also a pretty novel pet and can be very good conversations starters when you are having people over to your house for the first time. People remember you by the colorful parrot, or jet black myna bird you have. It is really not an exaggeration to say that birds for pets can make you new friends pretty quickly.

Another good thing about birds for pets is that they are surprisingly affectionate. Many people think that birds don’t like humans, but if you are careful to handle your pet frequently and gently, It will get used to your company. Many birds for pets are even happy to see their owners at the end of the day, squawking away cheerfully In a show of delight. It is always nice to have a pet that appreciates you.

Birds for pets are also lower maintenance than dogs in many ways. They will not keep you up all night barking. They don’t have to have full run of the house. Best of all, if you throw a blanket over their cage they will soon quiet down and go to sleep. They have a very primitive sense of day and night, so just seeing the light go black is enough to make them tired.
