Checking Out Charity Ratings

November 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Giving is always a great thing to do, if you can do it, and it makes the heart feel good. However, these days you really do have to think about where your money is going and what someone is going to do with it. The first thing you want to know is if a charity is real. There are some fake ones that pop up, take money, and then disappear. As sad as that sounds, it happens all of the time. Once you know a charity is real, you have to look at charity ratings to see where your money is going to go. You may be surprised at what you find.

You can find charity ratings in many places, and they are going to tell you which charities are the best and which ones are not doing so well. Some give as little as twenty percent of what you give to the actual cause. They take the rest and put it towards administrative and advertising purposes. That means they use it to get more money, and to pay the staff. Paying the staff is not a bad thing, but the pay rates can be very high. You don’t want to give to a for-profit charity. You may not realize that type of charity exists, but it does.

Charity ratings can tell you more than just where your money is going. Look for non-profit charities that give to causes that are near and dear to your heart. Find out exactly what they do and what your money is going to be used for. It is ultimately up to you if you wish to give or not. If you are not happy with what you see about an organization when you look through charity ratings, you can certainly take your money and put it somewhere that you think will do more good. You can expect some of your money to go towards raising even more money, but it should not be a lot of it.

Charity ratings can also tell you when a charity has been in trouble for one reason or another. You may find that you find surprising things about the charities that you have known for a long time. Even the most well-known may have some problems, or may not do enough with the money that they get. Look for charities that have a high amount of volunteer staff. That means you money goes further. Also look for ones with good records and a long history of giving where it is needed the most.
