Competitive Advantage

December 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Maintaining a competitive advantage in business can be tricky. After all, no matter what industry you are you probably have dozens of competitors. Everyone is trying to get ahead of the pack, and most of them try to do it in the same way. They might outsource their employees overseas, try to cut unnecessary programs and downsize their staff, obtain a differentiation advantage by offering some service that you don’t offer, or do something else. That is why, when you’re struggling for the competitive advantage, you have to keep one thing in mind. The goal isn’t necessarily to completely win and defeat all adversaries. The goal is to come up with a lucrative niche for yourself and your corporation that will keep you successful for years to come.

One of the best ways to do this is to find the right people. Many competitive advantage theorists say that having less workers at lower pay always gives you the advantage, but this is not necessarily the case. If you don’t know how to do business in Taiwan, moving to Taiwan isn’t going to help you even if you outfit costs less to run. Having the right people in the right place is worth paying them the right price. Even if you have to charge slightly more, clients will be more than willing to put up with it if they know they are getting the best service. Just giving people something they your competitors don’t gives you a sort of competitive advantage.

These sorts of competitive advantages don’t show up on business charts easily, but they do translate into real funds. Many classical economic sources work under the dubious assumption that everyone is constantly shopping around for a better deal, but this ignores some important facts. People like to be able to depend on the people they do business with. If they know that you always do your job well and that you are pleasant to work with, they are more likely to stick around. Even if competitive advantage would point to one of your opponents as the better choice because they charge less, offer more comprehensive services, etc., you can still keep or even gain clients through customer loyalty and word-of-mouth. In this day of downsizing and corporate doublespeak, just doing what you do well can sometimes be a revolutionary proposition.

That doesn’t mean that competitive advantage doesn’t have anything to do with the bottom line. Corporate advantage always comes down to the bottom line. Get people who aren’t efficient out of your company, and reward those who do a good job for you. Maintain a high standard of efficiency, and you will not have to hire as many people. You can save money while still paying good wages and keeping your company where it is.
