The world of forensic science used to be a great mystery to the general public. The CSI TV series (Crime Scene Investigation) has done much to entertain and inform about the work done in crime labs whenever homicide is afoot. The original show has produced two spin offs and merchandise from the franchise. More than 200 countries now broadcast the series.
The debut show, set in Las Vegas, appeared in 2000 with William Peterson as Supervisor Gil Grissom. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Productions, the audience response was very positive. Many famous personalities have been guests on the show, including Steve Buscemi, Faye Dunaway, Ned Beatty, Frank Gorshin and Kevin Federline.
The 9th Season began in October 2008 with a change of cast. William Peterson and Gary Dourdan have left and new characters have been introduced, played by Lauren Lee Smith and Laurence Fishburne. The CSI television series spin off, CSI: Miami began in 2002. The main role of Supervisor Horatio Caine is played by David Caruso. The Miami show makes good use of music on its soundtrack with a variety of genres by such artists as Eminem, Jay-Z, Prince, the Foo Fighters, and The Hives. The New York City version was introduced in 2004 and the star of CSI: NY is Gary Sinise, playing Detective Mac Taylor.
There have been some crossover episodes between the three series. The shows are in fact self-contained but also tie in together. This brand recognition is further emphasized by the three signature tunes of the three series. All are by British rock band, The Who. The CSI theme is Who Are You, the Miami show has Won’t Get Fooled Again and Baba O’Riley plays in the New York show.
As soon as The Who’s familiar songs are played, the audience knows that the CSI TV series will once again treat them to great acting and an interesting story with a few twists on the way. It’s fascinating to see how a killer could be caught by leaving fingerprints or tiny fibers from clothes. Blood patterns are also analyzed to show where the killer and victim were positioned and what kind of weapon was used.
The scientific community has recognized this fascination on the part of the public to forensic science as dramatized in the CSI TV series. With this in mind, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry put on an exhibition in 2007 called CSI: The Experience. This explored the world of the crime lab and many stars from the show attended, including William Peterson.
In addition to the televised shows and DVDs, fans can buy novelisations of the episodes, comic books based on the series and computer games. All this interest has led to an unexpected development in the UK where the demand for places on University courses for Forensic Science has greatly increased.
