When I was a kid, I used to love electronic project kits. I started off with the crystal radio that my parents got for me when I was about eight years old. In retrospect, I know that it was a simple electronic project kit. At the time, however, it seemed like a lot of work. I was absolutely astounded with myself when I was able to get it together and working. It’s pretty funny because our family had a high quality radio in the living room. Nonetheless, I loved listening to that crystal radio through the little ear piece it came with more than anything else.
I think that electronic project kit really introduced me to the joy of getting something done yourself. They really give you a feeling of accomplishment that is not matched by most projects out there. There is something that is almost magical about a finished electronic kit when you are a kid. Electronics seem so mysterious and so powerful. Knowing that you can actually put together a bunch of wires and components and make something that buzzes, beeps, flashes, or whatever is really inspiring. Finished electronic project kits really are more than the sum of their parts.
I ended up building many other Model electronic projects. I made a little robotic rowboat that could propel itself across the bathtub, a remote control dog, and some other basic snap together circuits and electromechanical projects. About the most fun I ever had with it, however, was with the 500 in 1 electronic project kit that I got on my 12th birthday. Unlike the other electronic project kits that I had assembled before, this one wasn’t limited to one project. You could make basically anything and everything with it. You could assemble rudimentary musical instruments, burglar alarms, simple games, and countless other projects with it. Even better, it taught you how things worked. Most electronic project kits only give you a really cursory explanation about the phenomena they demonstrate. With this one, however, you really get to understand what you are making.
Most people get over electronic project kits when they get older. In my case, however, the fascination only grew. I started to play music, and I ordered DIY electric guitar pedal kits that I could assemble at home. Not only was it cheaper than buying a factory make guitar pedal, but it allowed me to tweak the circuit. I could adjust components to change the values, altering the quality of distortion, the tone, and the performance of the pedal. I hadn’t really expected it, but I found out that electronic project kits can be every bit as satisfying for adults as they can be for kids.
