Essentials For Road Trip Planning

December 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

Nothing will kill a good road trip quicker than bad planning. Even when you want to see where the road takes you, and you don’t want to plan where you will sleep each night, you still have to put some planning in to what you need along the way. Road trip planning does not have to be too hard, but there are some things that you must do. Being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no map, a flat tire, and no cellular service isn’t exactly anyone’s dream of a fun trip.

Maps are essential for in any good road trip planning session. You can buy paper maps of each state you think you will be driving through, or you can plan your trip through ses like Rand McNally or Maps.com. There are many other great ses for just this purpose too. Some allow you to plot your trip point by point and they give you directions and maps that outline things very specifically. This part of road trip planning is not essential if you have GPS in your car or truck, but  certainly won’t hurt to have both.

You may not think of planning for emergencies as an essential part of road trip planning, but this is never something you should leave out. You should make sure that you have everything you need to fix or change a flat tire, and you should also have road flares and even a quart or two of extra oil. Make sure you have water, food, and blankets in your trunk as well, just incase you find that you are stranded for a b or overnight. Hopefully you won’t need any of these things, but that is not something you could ever predict when planning a road trip.

Another part of road trip planning that you should never skip is letting those you love know where you are going, and approximately how long you will be gone. Give your cell numbers to those who don’t have them, and also, any information about hotels or destinations, if you have chosen them ahead of time. You may even want to pick a time each day to check in with someone so they know that you are okay. This person can also be your contact if you were to get lost or stuck. Online maps make  so easy for someone to find the directions you need over the phone, and to guide you back to the right road should you get lost.
