General Woodworking Tools

November 30th, 2009 · No Comments

It has been my goal over the last several years to get a good set of general woodworking tools. I’ve been slowly building a collection up. At first, I thought I would just get a general tool set and be done with it. I got a hammer, a few saws, a few screwdrivers, clamps, knives, and other basic hand tools. When I finally started woodworking, however, I realized that this didn’t even begin to cut it. Depending on the project, you may need a wide variety of different general woodworking tools.

The approach I’ve had since then has been to borrow before I buy. There is a tool lending library in my neighborhood, so I can get pretty much any general woodworking tool I want from their if I’m willing to wait a little bit to get it and return it on time. I try it out, see how it works, and decide I want one. Usually, I buy one of my own. I knew that I had to get a cordless drill after seeing how much having one made my life easier, for example. When I borrowed a reciprocating saw from that shop, I also was convinced to buy one of my own. It made it so much easier to cut and shape wood.

I am glad that I bought those first general woodworking tools, however. After I started discovering  electric tools, I briefly thought that hand tools were useless but I was wrong. You really can’t get by without hand tools. You can have all the fancy drills, saws, and other electric equipment you want, but sooner or later you’ll need a plain old handsaw to do some fine work. And it will also teach you some patience. You really have to think about the process of making something because you can’t just start over as easily. Everything is so time consuming that you have to plan it out before you do it.

Of course, general woodworking tools aren’t really any good without general woodworking knowledge. If you don’t know how to use shop equipment, you should not have a shop. Fortunately, if you have a tool lending library in your town you probably also have classes on how to use tools. Tools safety is a big thing among the do-it-yourself community, so if you look around, you probably should be able to easily find someone to teach you. In the process, of course, you will pick up some useful building tips. It is the best way to get started as an amateur carpenter.
