When you know you are having problems conceiving, it is always a good idea to talk with your doctor about what is going on and why you think you may need some assistance in getting pregnant. The general rule that most doctors go by is that you should try for a year without assistance before the age of 35 before you seek help from infertility specialists. If you are over 35, that time is cut in half to six months. You should go by your age when deciding if you want to go see someone to be tested for problems and to see what your alternatives might be.
Your regular or family doctor can give you recommendations for infertility specialists that they think would work well with you. When you go, there are a few things that you can expect. The specialist is going to want to hear all about your medical history. They will concentrate on your reproductive history, but they are also going to know about any medical conditions or problems that you have had in the past. Be honest with your infertility specialists so that they can do the best possible job in finding what is wrong and assisting you in getting pregnant.
Infertility specialists will then want to run some tests on you to see what your problems may be. If they know you have endometriosis, they are going to want to give you the proper treatment to help you have a better environment in which you can get pregnant. If you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), they are going to have to do blood tests to see about your blood sugar, along with a physical exam. The infertility specialists can then determine what you should do next to get better.
Good infertility specialists are going to want to talk with your husband as well. The problems you are having with fertility could be things with which you have to deal, but they could also be things that are wrong with you husband. The specialist in infertility is going to want your husband to give a sperm sample so that they can check for a low sperm count and for low motility. If either is found, they can then give some advice to change things, or options that are open when that seems to be the biggest roadblock in getting pregnant.
It is important for you to do what your infertility specialists suggest if you want to have things come out for the best. Those with PCOS, for example, will be put on a diet, if necessary, to reverse some of the effects of this condition. They may be given medications by their infertility specialists as well. A man with lower sperm counts may be told to wear different underwear, to stay out of hot tubs and hot baths, and to restrict sex to once every two days to allow their count to build up. Following advice to the letter ensures you have the best chance possible to start the family that you dream of having.
