Live Concert DVD

November 13th, 2009 · No Comments

Nothing captures the excitement of a band more than seeing them live. Luckily for those who couldn’t get a ticket, there are live concert DVDs that bring us the best artists from the best venues. One of the most charismatic performers was Freddie Mercury and Queen - The DVD Collection: Live at Wembley Stadium is a thrilling recording of the entire concert in 1986 with bonus features. Queen blasts out the familiar hits to a light show, including Radio Ga Ga, One Vision, Another One Bites the Dust and Bohemian Rhapsody. The camerawork is particularly good, using multi angles and aerial shots. There are interviews with Roger Taylor and Brian May, a backstage documentary, rehearsal footage and a picture gallery. Wembley Stadium is the heart of English soccer and lost its iconic towers when the stadium was re-built. There is a tribute documentary to the famous Wembley Towers for the soccer fans.

Following the death of George Harrison, his friend Eric Clapton organized a tribute concert for him and the result is remembered in Concert for George, recorded in 2002 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.  It was a moving occasion but the tone of this live concert DVD is celebratory as the different interests in George’s life are brought together. In addition to Clapton, the performers included Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Billy Preston and Jeff Lynne. George’s son Dhani played backing guitar and Ravi Shankar and his daughter Anoushka played sitar. The Monty Python gang (with a guest appearance from Tom Hanks) performed The Lumberjack Song. The concert ends with a rendition of I’ll See You In My Dreams with Joe Brown on ukulele. There are behind the scenes interviews, and footage of the rehearsals and preparations for the show.

When Bob Geldof saw the plight of victims of the famine in Ethiopia on the TV news, he felt the need to try to help. The result was a record and a concert to raise funds and awareness. The Live Aid box set is more than a live concert DVD; it is also a piece of social history. Geldof’s initiative raised millions of dollars from the sale of the record and the Wembley Stadium concert. An American concert also took place on the same day in 1985, from the John.F. Kennedy stadium in Philadelphia and the DVD shows footage from both. Status Quo kicked off the proceedings with a rousing rendition of Rockin’ all Over the World. Other performers, from both sides of the Atlantic, included Bryan Ferry, U2, Queen, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, and Duran Duran. Mick Jagger and Tina Turner sang a memorable duet. The live concert DVD also contains a Food Trucks And Rock ‘n’ Roll documentary and the music video of the Band Aid single, Do They Know it’s Christmas? The video for the American fundraising record by USA for Africa is also included.

Another fundraising event took place following the volcanic eruption on Montserrat Island. Many people had been left homeless. The live concert DVD, Music for Montserrat records the performances from 1997 at London’s Royal Albert Hall, including Carl Perkins, Phil Collins, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler and Sting.
