I have had weight problems my whole life. Back when I was a kid, no one said obesity. Basically, they said that I was fat or, if they were feeling polite, that I was big boned. Nonetheless, all the obesity studies in this culture combined with the epidemic in health problems related to excessive weight have really cleared the air a little bit. Nowadays, it is possible to have a frank and honest discussions about the health problems associated with obesity. And by studying obesity, it may be possible to find a solution that works for you.
When people hear about my chronic weight problems, sometimes they act as if the issue is my laziness. Current obesity studies, however, suggest that there is more to it than that. The problem is that a lot of us have evolved for conditions of scarcity. Up until recently in evolutionary history, food was scarce and difficult for humans to come by. We’re built to accumulate as much of it as possible and store it for famine. Being able to carry a little bit of fat around was actually a big survival advantage over having a fast metabolism. As such, it is hard for certain people to keep off weight nowadays.
The problem is that it is more complicated than that. There are different obesity studies that reach different conclusions, so there is by no mean a consensus of opinion on the causes of weight gain. A lot of people think that culture has a decisive role to play. People who hang out with heavier friends or live in a family where healthy attitudes towards food are not taught have a much higher chance of putting on weight. Similarly, moving into a group which places more emphasis on body image ideals may help you lose weight. The relationships are complex and tenuous, but they are there.
All in all, it is hard to say what is what. Nonetheless, there is a lot of research that has yielded interesting results. Dietary supplements, stomach surgery, food addiction counseling, and many other techniques all have some of their roots and obesity studies. If you are obese, there is the possibility of participating in a health study to investigate safer ways for you to lose weight. The situation is still bleak for many people, but it is also hopeful. Who knows what tomorrow will hold. I think that people will continue to get healthier
