Office Privacy

November 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Many employees wonder how much office privacy they have when they are at work. The problem with this is that when you are at work, you are on someone else’s time, and you really can’t expect any employer to think it is okay for you to send out personal emails while you are working, or to spend time online for things that are not related to work. It might be a different story if you are using your lunch hour to send out emails, but that might also be a bad idea in some cases.

Office privacy is something that might differ from company to company. Some don’t care what their employees do as long as they are getting their work done. They end up being pretty hands off as long as there is not a problem. Other companies will scan some emails that go in and out of the company and may read anything that you send out or receive. If this is the case for you, you may think it is unfair and that you don’t have an office privacy, but you have to go with what your company will do. If you don’t want someone to read your emails, you should send them out from home.

If you have questions about office privacy, you should talk with someone in your human resources department. They can tell you what your company has in the way of policy about office privacy, and they can tell you what you should be doing and what you might want to save for later. They can’t always tell you if your emails might be read, but you should already know that this is a possibility at any place. If you find that you just can’t abide with the rules, you may have to find somewhere else to work.

You may just want to consider that you don’t have any privacy while you are at work. If you have a personal crisis that you need to take care of, you are better off going to your boss and asking for a few minutes of privacy to take care of whatever it is. Most people are understanding if you are facing a real emergency, and they will afford you a few minutes of office privacy to take care of whatever it is. Any other time though, you are on someone’s clock, and they want everything you can give them. Assume you are not alone at work, ever.
