plus size models

January 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

I have struggled with my weight for most of my life. Since I was a young child I have carried several extra pounds. I have had brief times in my life when I am close to the ideal weight for my height, but I always seem to put the weight back on with a few additional pounds. Even though I am over weight I am active and exercise often. The most difficult part of my weight issue through the years is finding nice clothes that fit and are in style.

In recent years the fashion industry has made some progress in improving the quality of the plus size clothes. Recently more catalogs and clothing advertisements have started using plus size models in displaying the clothing. This is very helpful to see how the clothing items looks on someone with a bigger frame. It has always bothered me when the thin models were used to display the larger size clothing. I seemed that the clothing looked sloppy and unattractive. Seeing the plus size models posing with confidence and
poise helps those of us that are heavy to feel more acceptable.

With the high number of overweight people you would think the fashion industry would do more to creating affordable clothing for us. Many discount stores have larger sizes, but the material used is usually a synthetic blend and the styles do not match those available in the smaller sizes. For some reason large print and loud colors are featured in plus size clothing. The fabric and colors are not flattery on anyone no matter what their size. I was impressed when two stores in the mall that feature larger size clothing, were represented in the mall fashion show. The plus size models that wore the outfits in the show looked very nice and featured as often as the skinny models. Their hair and makeup were done well and the fashion was very trendy. The plus size models are good for young overweight girls to see. Having been there myself, I know it is difficult to feel good about yourself and your size when so much of our society puts such an emphasis on being thin. I think that seeing the plus size models on the runway and in magazines help these girls accept that not everyone is designed to be tall and skinny. It also helps them realize that they can do and be anything that they want to in their lives. They do not have to think that they cannot have accomplishments because they are overweight. Plus size fashion still has a ways to go regarding variety and style, but it seems like each year there are more items to choose from and that the fashion industry is catering more to those of us that have curves and a little extra flesh.
