I hear a lot of parents talking about how they are having a hard time potty training their children. Most of the ones complaining about how things are going are trying to push their children when they are way too young. I’m not an expert or anything, but as a writer I do a lot of research. This has been one thing that I have written about a lot, and I have come to the conclusion that many parents simply don’t know where to get good information about potty training, and others just don’t care. They want their kids trained and that is that.
The most important thing that you should know about potty training is that the timing is up to your child. You can wish and hope all you want, but you should know that they will not train until they are ready. If you push them too early, you are going to make it harder on them, and you are going to push the process even further into the future. You are not in control when it comes to potty training, and no matter how badly you want them to use the potty, you are going to have to wait until they are darn good and ready if you want to see any progress.
You have to know what signs you should be looking for in your child that will signal that they are ready for potty training. Your child will show a very strong interest in the potty, and they may even try to watch you go whenever you are in the bathroom. Children who are getting ready for potty training quite often remain dry for a long time, and they always let you know when they are making a bowel movement. There are many other signs, and when you notice more than one of them going on at the same time, you may want to try to introduce them to the process.
I am one of those who believes that Pull-Ups have no place in potty training. I didn’t use them, and I think they confused the child. They might be okay for overnight use, but if you should put underwear on them during the day. They need to feel their accident, and you have to resign yourself to cleaning up a few messes. When you are potty training, you should never get upset over an accident, or act like they are any big deal. Encouragement is the only emotion you should show them. If you freak out over an accident while potty training, you may scare them right back into their diaper. Take your time, and remember that they will let you know when the time is right. This is one thing that is entirely up to them.
