The pregnancy test can be a very daunting little piece of plastic. People see them in different ways, depending on where they are in their life. Some see it as a sign of hope that might tell them they are finally going to add to their family, and some hope that there is no baby because they just aren’t ready. Either way, women have to be smart about taking one. They give results, but there are some times when the results are not true.

The good news is that a positive is almost always a positive. When the two lines show up, or the little window says you are pregnant, you are. You should immediately follow up with your doctor for a blood test, but false positives are very rare. However, a negative does not mean that someone is not pregnant. Many are crushed when they get the results, and they may in fact be pregnant after all. The problem was using the pregnancy test too early and expecting them to work correctly. It pains me to see women testing too early and being heartbroken. Though it is hard to wait, taking a pregnancy test before your period is truly late might mean you aren’t getting the right information. It’s hard, but it is best to wait, even if you are anxious. If you wait a few days, you may even save some money because you won’t be second guessing the results as much and you won‘t be tempted to run out and buy more just to be sure.

These tests are more accurate than ever, and they can detect pregnancy earlier than ever before. However, a pregnancy test should not be a thing of angst because it was taken too early to read hormones that are not high enough to register just yet. Some are more expensive than others, but most of them work all the same. The problem with the cheaper types of pregnancy test is that they often malfunction because of design. If you get a positive on a cheap one, verify with a more expensive one, or even better, see your doctor for the blood work that will tell the tale once and for all.
