Protecting Wooden Bathroom Furniture Pieces

December 4th, 2009 · No Comments

Home décor is something that we use to say a bit about who we are. Not only do we want to have something that expresses who we are, we want something that we feel comfortable in, and that gives our home the feel that we want it to have. You can do whatever you want, as long as you have the budget, but you do have to care for what you get. Some won’t put wood items in bathrooms, but some would not have it any other way. If you have wooden bathroom furniture, you should know these items need a bit more care than other wood in other places in your home.

Most people have at least some wooden bathroom furniture pieces in their homes, but the most common is the vanity. If you don’t have this, you probably don’t have much wood elsewhere in the bathroom. However, you can find pieces that you can use for your entire bathroom if that is the look for which you are going. It can be a very homey and warm feeling for a bathroom, so don’t think you have to skip that if that is what you really want. You can find this type of wood bathroom furniture in any home improvement store.

You will find that having untreated wooden bathroom furniture is simply out of the question. This is because wood is very porous, and is going to take in and hold any moisture that is in the room. Because this is one room in which water is used all of the time, this can be a huge problem. If left untreated, wooden bathroom furniture is going to suck in the moisture, expand and then warp. In some cases, it can even produce mold. That could make your family sick.

One option for protecting the wood bathroom furniture that you have in your home is to have it sealed and varnished. This leaves you with the color and texture of the wood, but it is protected from the moisture that hangs in the air after a hot shower, or from the splashes that are bound to happen. You would choose the varnish that you want to have, and the use a water sealant on the top of that. It would be much like what you would do to an outdoor deck, but make sure the sealant is approved for indoor use.

Though this is not always a good look, you can paint your wooden bathroom furniture if that is what you want to do to protect it. In the right décor, this can look fabulous if you know what you are doing. Make sure you use a paint with some gloss, as it helps to repel water. You can also use the same sealant that you would use over varnish if you choose. Having paint on your wooden bathroom furniture may only be a problem due to peeling. Even when protected, it can come loose after time. Keep an eye on it, as you may have to redo the paint more often than you would otherwise.
