Save paper and money before you subscribe: online magazine editions

November 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Along with everything else we buy, print magazines have become quite pricey. For the cost of a single issue, you can buy a book! Not so long ago, you might not have thought twice about buying the latest issue of your favorite mag. Now, with prices of $6 to $10 and more, we’re much less likely to buy a print edition, unless we know and love the magazine.

Perhaps this explains why most print magazines now publish online as well and accounts for the surge in online magazines which do not issue print editions at all. If you enjoy the entertainment that magazines provide, but don’t like the expense, here are some ways to use the convenience of the online magazines to check out the content before you pay for a subscription.

Most of the print magazines you’ll find at the supermarket’s magazine stand have online editions. If you see a magazine that looks interesting, search out their website and go explore. You might well wonder why the publisher makes the magazine available online, when it’s free to view. The short answer is that they prefer that you buy the print edition, or better yet subscribe, but they use the website to sell you on the magazine.

The online edition is usually an abbreviated version. You will find plenty of content, but not everything they have to offer. Sometimes they withhold the very best articles, whetting your appetite with the rest. That said, online magazines are a great resource for consumers. You’ll certainly get a sense of the quality and diversity of the contents without spending a dime. Looking at their archives can yield lots of valuable information. You may just be convinced that it’s worth paying for the glossy print edition.

The magazine fiend can also find new material from all over the world in online magazine directories. After all, there is a magazine published on just about every topic and hobby and which you might never run across at a news stand. Let’s say your interest is in archeology or Arabian horses. You’ll find such a magazine listed in one directory or another. You can check out their website and see if it’s worth a single purchase or subscription.

Then there are magazines which only appear online. The diversity of material is tremendous. These exclusively virtual magazines make their money through sales of associated products advertised on the website. Many of them have high quality information, so everyone’s happy.

So if your budget is cramped or you’d just like to save a few trees, investigate the online magazine possibilities before you buy. Then again, this  search can end up with more purchases than you’d have made at the magazine rack!
