Raising children may be one of the most daunting things that anyone can do while on our earth. We have manuals that tell us how to program our DVD players, and we can take our cars to a mechanic when we don’t know why it won’t stop stalling at red lights, but there is no book on child rearing. You may argue and say there are plenty, but because children are so different, finding the one that fits yours is almost impossible. Parenting is often something we do on the fly, and we learn as we go. One thing you can study is the stages of child development.
Most books do offer some insight into what you can expect with children through these stages of child development, but you do have to think of these books as guides rather than the gospel truth. The book may say your child should be saying at least ten words by a certain age, but that is not true of all children. If your child is behind, it does not mean they are going to struggle through learning later one. On the flip side, if they are far beyond this stage of early childhood development, it does not mean they are gifted. It just means they are going at their own pace.
Some make the mistake of thinking of the stages of child development along the lines of what their earlier children went through, or how their friends’ children are progressing. This can lead to frustration and bragging, neither of which are good for any relationships. The stages of child development for each child will come when they come, and comparisons are not fair to anyone. It doesn’t matter if Jayne walks a month before John. They will soon be running around together in the backyard, and that will be a passing memory, at best.
There are times when you should think about the stages of child development with some intensity. Children do have their own time tables, but with some children, you may notice that the average age for something comes and goes, and then goes on even more. If your child is behind in any form of early childhood development to the point where they are light years behind peers, you should be a bit concerned. Take your child to your pediatrician for further evaluation. There still may be nothing wrong, but it doesn’t hurt to find out.
