When I was a child, I ran around outside all of the time. I did not watch a lot of television, but that was always my own choice. When it was rainy outside, or when I was with my cousins for the day, we made time to play board games. Some of them were loud and drove the adults nuts, but they kept us busy and happy. I still love to play board games, and I play them with my daughter. I like to help her learn to play strategy board games, as they can help her learn more than just how to play a game.
What is different about strategy board games is that they force you to think ahead. You don’t just take your turn and move your piece around a board. These other games are fun, are usually the ones with which children begin. They set the groundwork for learning and using strategy board games to have more fun and learn some interesting things about how to move through life. That sounds heavy, but it is just all in good fun at this point in life.
Strategy board games are all about fun, and that is what children should focus on. These can help them learn many things that are going to be helpful in school and in life, but don’t tell them that. They just want to have a good time, and that should be the focus. You can watch them bloom while you are playing strategy board games together. You are going to see them think beyond their current move, and perhaps see them go through some problem solving moments. Those are going to make you proud of them.
One of the most traditional of strategy board games out there is Monopoly. You know that you love this game if you have ever played it, and that it involves a lot of thinking ahead. You have to manage your money the right way, make choices about property, and know when to risk what you have to make more money. These are all hidden life lessons that you may use today. Your children are going to learn these things from this and other strategy board games very quickly without realizing what is going on.
Other strategy board games include Risk, Chess, and Checkers. These all require someone to think ahead. Chess is one that does this in spades, and is something that takes a long time to get really good at playing. There are reasons why many highly intelligent people play Chess. Are they playing it because they are smart or are they smart because they play? That is an interesting question. There are other great games out there too, and you should have no trouble picking them out of the crowd. Take the time to play strategy board games with your kids and see what happens in the future.
