We got an offer for free tax preparation software in the mail. The problem was that it wasn’t really free if your taxes have extras like deductions and such. That was fine with me, as the price for the tax preparation software in the form that I needed was still much less than going to a tax service. We looked at many brands, and decided to go with the one that we got in the mail. You don’t have to do that, as you can look in stores to decide what works best for your needs. If you have a business, for example, you need something more complex.

You do have to be careful when you use tax preparation software however. There are some simple mistakes that you can make if you don’t understand some aspects of your taxes. For example, when my husband figured the allowance for my home office space, he did something wrong. When we finished, the tax preparation software told us that we were getting a fifteen thousand dollar refund. Something was not right. We went back and found the problem, and it started because he didn’t understand some of the wording.

If that might be a problem for you, find some software that has an extensive help section, and use it. It may take you longer to get through your taxes this way, but you will know that you have done things right. If you think the end results seems to be way off, you have to go back through and see what happened. Had we filed for that large of a refund, we would have been audited in a hurry, and it would have been our fault. Tax preparation software can be a huge money saver, but only if you are careful about what you are doing.
