What Does Spotting During Pregnancy Mean?

November 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Pregnancy can be a magical time for women who are eager to get started with their own families. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things about this time in life that people get wrong. Even more unfortunately, these are the things that people pass on from one person to the next. There are myths about what a woman can or can not do, and some things that are just off the wall. One thing that can happen is spotting during pregnancy. There are times when this is a concern, but not always. Your doctor knows best.

Spotting during pregnancy can be very normal for some women. It is scary though, and should not be something you let slide without consulting with your doctor. There could be low progesterone levels that are affecting your system. If your levels are too low, you could be at risk for a miscarriage, even when the baby is very healthy. If that happens, there are things that can be done to up your levels. That may mean spotting during pregnancy disappears and you won’t have to worry about that any longer.

At times, spotting during pregnancy really means nothing. That does not mean it is not scary. Don’t think that this has anything to do with your period. I had a friend once who was told that perhaps she had an ‘old period’ coming out. I could not believe a grown women with children of her own would think such a thing, but many women have no idea what they are talking about. This is often because they have heard the same things about spotting during pregnancy and just repeated what someone has said. If you are pregnant, your lining stays. You don’t carry around a lost period.

How concerned you should be about spotting during pregnancy can depend on how much and where you are in your pregnancy. If you have spotting when you first find out that you are pregnant, it could be that you are going to have a miscarriage. You may want to call your doctor to be seen. It might also mean nothing if it stays light and goes away quickly. If you have spotting during pregnancy when you are further along, it could be a list of things, but as long as it does not get heavy, it is probably harmless.

Some women have spotting during pregnancy the whole way through when there is nothing wrong. No one really knows why that is or why it happens to some and not others. Some can have this during one pregnancy but not another. Your health determines how concerned you are about your spotting during pregnancy. If you have a fertility issue, it could be something serious. No matter what you think may be going on, if you are spotting while pregnant, see your doctor at once, and then follow their advice to the letter.
