The very first tools for woodworking that I bought were pretty rudimentary. Back then, I was into wood carving, so I did not require that much. Woodworking tools for carving are basically different knives. There are knives meant to gouge out the wood, knives for making a fine edge, knives for creating rounded angles, and for any other kind of detail work you could imagine. At the time, I thought I had que a collection of woodworking tools, but I really only had one single case filled with knives. There were maybe eight different tools and a sharpening stone.
When I actually got in to home construction projects, however, I needed much more sophisticated woodwork tools. Tools for woodworking come in all shapes and sizes, and some of them can be pretty pricey. My first serious woodworking tool was a reciprocating saw. It was an old model that my dad had sting in the garage for decades, and probably wasn’t in the best shape. Nonetheless, I loved . I can do stuff with that I could never imagine before I got . I had the abily to shape wood with precise cuts, allowing me to create furnure, rudimentary cabinetry, and many other projects. In retrospect, the stuff I was making back then was pretty crude, but I still enjoyed .
As my skills with carpentry improved, I got more woodworking tools. I know a lot of people who will start off by getting a whole woodworking tool set, but I enjoyed getting my tools one at a time. I really had to learn how to use each hammer, each saw, each sander and each router before I allowed myself to buy a new one. That way, I appreciated everything I got. Each new tool allowed me to do new projects that I hadn’t been able to do before.
That is why, now that I have a son of my own, I am introducing him to woodworking tools pretty slowly. Although hand saws are much cruder and slower going than power tools, I let him work with a handsaw and some nails just to show how many interesting projects you can do with some crude and simplistic tools. That way, when he gets more high-tech and high qualy tools, he will really appreciate what he is working with . Sooner or later, we will start a first full project together. I’m thinking of building a boat personally, but we’ll see what he wants to do too before deciding.
